Our mission is to ensure the highest possible quality of waters in Iron County by educating and engaging our communities in projects that will restore and preserve our watersheds for future generations.
Iron County has 7 major watersheds each comprised of smaller watersheds, contributing to a hydrologic river basin. These watersheds drain into Lake Superior, Lake Michigan or the Mississippi River.
Here are some more interesting facts:
- There are 250 lakes in Iron County. There are 200 miles of rivers, 43 miles of which are Blue Ribbon Trout Streams.
- 18 miles are the Paint River are
considered Wild & Scenic. - You are never more than 2 & 1/2 miles from a lake, river, stream, creek or pond.
- Higher elevations divide the watersheds in Iron County.
- Wetlands serve as a sponge to alleviate flooding and also filter pollution.
Threats to our Watersheds:
- Inadequate sewer/septic systems
- Unmanaged soil erosion
- Improper use of fertilizers & pesticides
- Aquatic invasive species
- Aquifers exposed to active and abandoned mine sites
- Careless use and disposal of petroleum products
